Meet Our Leadership Team

Our academic leadership is built on a foundation of experience and collaboration. The Head Teacher works alongside a dedicated team, including the Deputy Head of Pastoral, Heads of Section for Kindergarten, Primary, and Secondary, as well as the Directors of the national SEP programme. Together with the Director of the School of Character and the Head of Operations, they form our Senior Leadership Team—guiding and upholding the school’s educational vision with wisdom and passion.

Tom Wingate

Founding Head

Tom grew up and was educated in England. During his high school years, he attended St. George’s College, Weybridge, just outside London. Of French, British, and German descent, he has a Mexican wife and three adult children. He is also a grandfather.

Tom’s chief qualifications come from four universities: UKC (Canterbury, UK), Leeds University, Georgia State University (Atlanta, USA), and most recently, Birkbeck College, University of London. His teaching post-graduate qualifications come from both Leeds and Georgia State. Tom, along with a team of British-educated teachers, founded TWS in 2016.

In a career that now spans over 40 years, Tom has been involved in many types of schools across several countries. Most prominently in Mexico, he held senior positions at a British-international school, while in the UK, he worked in the English Department and Middle School administration—specifically as Head of Year 9, the main intake year—at the highly renowned City of London School (2001–2007).

At CLS, Tom was also the coach of Public Speaking and Debating, with his teams winning many top-level competitions, including the prestigious English Speaking Union trophy in 2006.

Originally a teacher of English and English literature, Tom has published poetry and pieces on 19th-century stained glass, literature, and history. He still regularly contributes articles to The Dickensian magazine in London. In 2020 and 2021, he was invited to address chapters of the North American National Honor Society about Charles Dickens’ works.

Elena Casas

Headteacher

Ms. Casas was the founder and Director of the School of Psychology at Anahuac University. She is a member of the scientific committee of FISAC (Fundación de Investigaciones Sociales A.C.) and of the Consultancy Committee of AMEDIRH (Asociación Mexicana en Dirección de Recursos Humanos). She holds the following qualifications:

Ms. Casas was Deputy Head of TWS between 2016 and 2025. She was appointed Headteacher in August 2025.

Ahsah Vazquez

Head of Early Years and Primary

With more than 25 years of experience in training and education, Ahsah Vázquez brings visionary leadership and a deep commitment to academic excellence at The Wingate School. She holds a Master’s in Education and a BA in Institutions' Management from Universidad Panamericana.

As Head of Kindergarten and Primary since 2017, Ahsah has successfully implemented the International Primary Curriculum, Literacy, and Mathematics programmes, while mentoring teachers, teaching assistants, and trainee educators. For the past seven years, she has also served as a PGCE mentor, guiding future teachers through their professional qualification with expertise and care.

Her career reflects extensive work in multicultural environments, where she has excelled in coaching, mentoring, and team development. Beyond her leadership at TWS, Ahsah has held roles as Academic and Training Manager, University Coordinator, and Digital Coach, where she designed training programmes, developed academic content for postgraduate studies, and guided educators in inclusive, intercultural, and digital teaching methodologies.

A proactive team builder and lifelong learner, Ahsah firmly believes that as educators, we can make a real difference by preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities of today’s world, fostering inclusive environments where every learner can thrive.

Vinay Jawahar

Head of Secondary School

Vinay Jawahar is an experienced educator and leader who has worked in international education on three continents. Before joining The Wingate School in August 2021 as Head of Secondary, Mr. Jawahar was the IBDP Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge Coordinator at Colegio Gran Bretaña in Colombia, where he taught History, Global Politics, and Theory of Knowledge.

He also served as Head of Admissions and later as Head of Academics at UWC Mahindra College, a highly selective two-year residential college in India with students from over 60 countries pursuing the IB Diploma.

In addition to teaching and administrative experience at both the university and secondary school levels, Mr. Jawahar has worked closely with the International Baccalaureate Organisation, helping to develop the Global Politics curriculum for the Diploma Programme and serving as an Assistant Examiner for Global Politics.

Before his career in international education, Mr. Jawahar worked in the policy and civil society sectors in both the U.S. and India. He has published widely, including in Current History, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, El Espectador (Colombia), Columbia Journal of International Affairs, Oxford Analytica, and Brown Journal of World Affairs, on Latin American politics, particularly issues of democratic governance, human rights, and security policy.

A product of international education himself, Mr. Jawahar received his IB Diploma from UWC Mahindra College, followed by a B.A. in International Politics & Economics and Spanish from Middlebury College, VT, an M.A. in Comparative Politics from Princeton University, NJ, and a PGCEi from the University of Nottingham. He also spent a year at the Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile.

Mr. Jawahar lives in Mexico with his wife, two children, two dogs, and a cat. His children attend The Wingate School; the pets were denied entry following a rigorous but fair admissions process.

Cristina du Solier

Head of the School of Character

Cristina has over seventeen years of experience in education, working with children of all ages. She believes that the value of education lies in its ability to reshape a person’s life. She holds a BA in Ciencias de la Educación and a Master’s in Education. Cristina has also studied and worked closely in areas such as emotional intelligence, child neglect, children’s mental well-being, and equality issues.

She founded an innovative social responsibility programme at another large school in Mexico City, and also worked as Residential Director at King’s College, Soto de Viñuelas, part of the Inspired network.

Cristina has been serving as the school’s Safeguarding Lead for the fourth consecutive year. She constantly seeks to learn new ways to connect with her students, helping them understand what is good, choose what is right, and take responsibility for their actions—thereby helping to create a strong and supportive community.

Verónica Velderrain Sáenz

Deputy Head Pastoral

Verónica is a dedicated leader in the fields of education and psychology, bringing 17 years of clinical and academic experience to her role. As a professional, wife, and mother of four children, she has been part of TWS since its early stages. Verónica’s professional background informs her psycho-pedagogical strategy. She worked in private psychotherapy, parental consulting, and psychological evaluation for 14 years. She also served as the Coordinator for the Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology at Universidad Anáhuac and worked as a High School and Middle School Psychologist prior to joining Wingate.

Verónica's tenure at Wingate has been marked by strategic contributions focused on integral student development. She designed and implemented the comprehensive, school-wide Sexuality Programme. She also previously served as the School of Character Coordinator. She has served in parent admissions interviews and delivered specialised parent workshops. More recently, she led the development of the 'Constructive Dialogues' strategy for managing controversial topics, a programme that was recognised as a Promising Practice by Character.org in May 2025. Ultimately, Verónica’s work is guided by the philosophy of placing "the child in the centre," a core value of The Wingate School. She approaches every student as an individual with unique potential, as she feels every child in the School is her own.
